A common question I get from agents is - "Todd, what would be your definition of the perfect real estate agent business?" My answer…

The real problem for real estate agents who want to grow their business starts from the moment you get your license, and you are battling this problem every day you go to work.

Think about it for a moment.

You decide to get into the real estate business because you like working with people, you love real estate, you want to make more money, and want to be your own boss. So, you get your license and pick a real estate company - probably because you knew someone there. You show up and then look around at what everyone else is doing and copy them.

And therein lies the problem!

The norms and standards, what agents learn and put to work, the way it is primarily done around the real estate industry, ARE NOT pathways to super success. They are CAREER KILLERS.

For example, the median annual gross income of Realtors is $41,200.

First-year agents take home less than $9,000 a year on average.

80% of all agents do not make it past their 5th year.

95% earn under $100K.

99% earn under $250K a year.

That's a paltry 1% of agents that go on to earn GOOD money. Millionaire Agents? They are like Big Foot, UFOs, and Ghosts. You hear about them, but you never really see them.

And remember, income is the outcome of successfully helping buyers and sellers get what they want. So, a limit to income is a limit to the number of people helped. Who says the maximum number of people you can help buy or sell real estate is 36 to 50 a year? But as you know, very few agents even hit that ceiling. Why would agents LIMIT their success? I don't believe they want to. It's just a norm for the industry.

For those who do make decent money, they find themselves working weekends and evenings—juggling all the balls themselves, racing around every day, and trying to be all things to all people.

It is impossible for the solo agent to be at their kid's ballgame and showing homes to a buyer at the same time. They are forced into cheating one of them. I didn't sign up for that, and I don't believe you did either.

Most real estate brokerages across the landscape are not built or made to have the solutions to agent's growth issues. The numbers prove that. An industry where 80% fail out every 5 years and where 99% do not break the Good Money ceiling and where you resort to looking OUTSIDE your current place for help means there's a real issue that exists – AND a real opportunity as well.

Most brokerages and their existing models are places to hang a license, and then they help agents… be agents.

Almost everything they produce is to get their agents rowing in the same direction, all of them doing the same things, and the results speak for themselves. In many offices, the top agent is someone who makes 50 sales. What is somewhat sad is that many agents look at this as their ceiling. They aspire to do just that. Why would they NOT think bigger?
